1967 – Dalston Western…
Taken on July 9th 1967
BR Eastern Region DMU on Dalston Western Junction, on its way to Broad Street station, on a bright sunny day in July 1967, with the Western Junction signal box nearest the camera, and the Eastern Junction box just visible in the far distance, under the bridges to the left..
At that time, the tracks on the right were for the ‘fourth rail’ North London Line DC electric services to Broad Street, with the Eastern Region tracks to their left, and the tracks going straight under the bridges were normally used for freight traffic to East London and the Docks, with the site of the closed Kingsland station roughly where the bushes are, beyond the first bridge..
Today (2025) the lines on the right are for London Overground DC third rail services to the new (subterranean) Dalston Junction station, which (re)opened in 2010, for services down via the East London Line to New Cross and West Croydon. The ex-Eastern Region lines have gone, but the freight-only lines on the left are now used by London Overground AC overhead electric services, past the reopened Kingsland station, to Stratford. Western Junction signal box survived in use for many years, but was finally taken out of service in January 2011, and demolished in March..
Restored from an orange-colour-shifted original..
