1961 – N7 by the Vanished Station..
Taken on June 24th 1961
Ex-GER/LNER N7 0-6-2T 69640 on its way towards Canning Town station, with the 1:40pm service from North Woolwich to Stratford, in June 1961. This was the site of the old Tidal Basin station, which had closed in 1943 after bomb damage, and passenger numbers falling due to evacuation from the area after considerable devastation during the London Blitz…
69640 had entered service in 1926, and was withdrawn in September 1962, and scrapped. One member of the class was preserved..
Today (2025) the trackbed here is occupied by the Docklands Light Railway, with a footbridge over the tracks, and DLR Royal Victoria station a bit further along, just by the last carriage seen here..
Restored from a grainy (Agfacolor) original..
Original slide - property of Robert Gadsdon
