Scrapyard of Dreams...

Taken in about 1968

A view across the Woodhams Brothers scrapyard at Barry in about 1968, with a selection of ex-GWR and LMS locos, with some SR and BR Standard, and a few North British diesels. Only one ex-LNER loco was fortunate enough to end up here, due to the relatively early withdrawal of most of them by BR..

This one scrapyard is in many ways responsible for the success of the UK steam preservation movement, as the majority of locos seen here went on to be ‘rescued’ and restored to working condition. The diesels were not so fortunate, as none of them survived.…

The last locos left the scrapyard in the 1990s, and today all this has gone – including the oil depot – and the site is occupied by houses and shopping centres.. The only surviving landmark is the Barry Docks hydraulic pumping station chimney in the background..

Restored from an under-exposed cyan-colour-shifted original..
