1961 - Crumlin Panorama..

Ex-GWR 72xx class 2-8-2T 7230 passes with a train of oil tank wagons, with the spectacular Crumlin Viaduct - and a 41xx prairie tank - in the background. The other object on the viaduct appears to be a compressor, on a p/w trolley..

The viaduct was completed in 1857, and was the highest in the UK. The line it carried closed in June 1964, and demolition work was started in 1965, during which time scenes from the film 'Arabesque' were shot around it.

Demolition was completed in 1967, and today (2021) only the remains of the abutments at either end are still visible. The rail line in the foreground has also gone, and the distant railway lines in the valley below are now just a single track.

7230 was withdrawn in June 1964, and scrapped at the end of that year. Three of the class have been preserved.
