1976 - '104 Passing the Refinery
BR Birmingham RC&W DMU - Class 104 - approaching North Woolwich station (behind the camera) on a grey day in summer 1976.
The line was later electrified - with DC third-rail - and linked up with the North London line, and operated with ex-SR slam-door EMUs, and later with Class 133 dual-voltage EMUs.
The last Class 104 was withdrawn from BR service in 1995, and today (2019) 13 cars have survived into preservation, but some of these are in poor condition.
Passenger services ended in 2006, and today, the 'Elizabeth Line' emerges here, and runs over the old trackbed, towards Silvertown.
Many of the old buildings here have gone, but the Tate and Lyle sugar refinery (in the distance, to the left of the DMU cab) still exists, and is still in operation.
