1979 - A4 at Perth..
Preserved LNER Gresley A4 pacific 60009 ''Union of South Africa'' waiting to leave Perth station, in 1979.
The loco entered service in April 1937 named ''Osprey'' but was renamed two months later. It was withdrawn in June 1966, and purchased from BR soon after that, for preservation. The cab-side 'Springbok' emblems were added after preservation, but were later replaced by the then-current coat-of-arms.
Today (2019) 60009 is the only one of four A4s preserved in the UK to be in operation, but is due to be 'retired' to a purpose-built museum when its boiler ticket expires, later in the year.
The station looks much smarter, but the middle track seen here has been removed, and there is a new footbridge/lift where the photographer is standing.
Restored from a grainy original..
Original slide - photographer unknown
