1963 - Polished A4 at Aberdeen

LNER Gresley A4 pacific 60009 ''Union of South Africa'' at Aberdeen Ferryhill shed, in 1963. The paint on the tender seems to be a slightly lighter shade of green than the loco..

The 'Springbok' plaque was unusual, as there was only one carried - on the left-hand side of the loco - as seen here.

The loco entered service in April 1937 named ''Osprey'' but was renamed two months later. It was withdrawn in June 1966, and purchased from BR soon after that, for preservation, and was seen here in October 2018:

Today (2019) 60009 is the only one of four A4s preserved in the UK to be in operation, but is due to be 'retired' to a purpose-built museum when its boiler ticket expires, later in the year.

Aberdeen Ferryhill shed closed to steam in March 1967, and closed completely in 1987, and the site is now a housing estate..

Restored from a grainy original..
