20211218 Elf OFF the Shelf 18 of 25

The announcement came giving instructions on where to gather for lunch. The foot-long sandwiches had arrived, but they didn’t have to wait too long, if you consider fifteen minutes too long. But Maurice was glad it wasn’t longer than the twenty minutes originally anticipated.

There was a mad rush down the hall to where the sandwiches were provided. Without hesitation, all the elves, including Maurice, found a spot and waited for Santa to give the blessing. Now one would expect that after the “Amen”, there would be a scramble to grab the sandwich and begin eating. But Maurice couldn’t believe what he was seeing. The elves were gazing at their sandwiches and admiring just how they were assembled. They loved the oven fresh smell of the bread and the lightly buttered topping. They also saw the one layer after another of meat or cheese, some toppings like lettuce, spinach, or thinly sliced tomatoes, and for those who desired, onions.

Maurice loves onions. He was told that the ‘stuff’ in onions will combat the germs that cause sore throats and colds. He would love to eat onions, either raw or sauteed, and enjoy the benefits of the flavor as well as the medicinal value. Bentley, on the other hand, had to stay a room away from Maurice after he would eat an onion sandwich. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away, and an onion a day,” Maurice began.

“Keeps everyone away!” Bentley would say. And with everyone else away from him, he could get rid of his sore throat or cold.

But Maurice also knew that by eating lunch, he would miss out on that valuable nap time. He figured out a way to only eat half a sandwich, and carefully wrapped it in put it in the ice box to take home later. Some of the other elves did the same thing, as they, like Maurice, wanted a little ‘snooze’ time before returning to work.
