outdated two-lane bridge on Wards Road in Lynchburg, Virginia - 1965

from the archives of The News & Advance...

This Fred Knight photo ran in the Lynchburg newspaper on March 17, 1965 with the news that Lynchburg City Council had requested federal funds to widen Wards Rd. from two to four lanes from Fort Avenue to a point where the road was already four lanes beyond the intersection seen here, in front of the K-Mart. The proposal included the widening of the bridge seen here over the Norfolk & Western Railway.

Some of the former businesses seen here are Lendy's Big Boy / Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Texaco service station (both left), and a Gulf service station and the Cities Service station beyond it (right).
