That are those Pelicans sqawking about?

Blue-foots have much in common with masked boobies. They both nest on the ground, and both fancy sardines.

But blue-foots avoid conflict with their larger and more aggressive relatives by choosing inland sandy or rocky nesting areas not occupied by masked boobies.

Blue-foots tend to feed closer to home than the far-ranging masked boobies.

Boobies tend to pair up in manogamous relationships once they reach breeding age.

Booby females usually hatch 2 or 3 eggs right on top of the bare ground. The male makes a ring of small rocks with just a few weed stems he might find (pickings are very slim though) and that is her nest.

Once the eggs are laid the male does most of the sitting. The eggs must have protection from the continuously hot sun or they will not hatch. They also must be protected from gulls and other predator birds that would just love to have a soft boiled booby egg as a snack.
