ONE-HIT WONDERS (U.K. EDITION): Glenn & Chris - Diamond Lights

Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle are two of Great Britain’s all-time greatest football (soccer) players. In 1987, the two were teammates in the popular Tottenham Hotspur Football Club-Hoddle a midfielder and Waddle a winger. An inebriated karaoke performance by the duo at an awards ceremony was deemed quite good by those in attendance and soon the footballers were in the studio recording the electro-tinged ‘Diamond Lights.’ Though devoid of any actual singing talent, it was hoped that the duo would bring the same kind of excitement on wax as on the football field.

And they did, sort of. Released in April, shortly after the Spurs winning FA Cup semi-final match against Watford, the single peaked at a respectable #12 on the UK pop chart. In mid-May the Spurs lost to Coventry City in the FA Cup Final and ‘Diamond’ was off the charts by mid-June having spent a total of eight weeks there.

Hoddle and Waddle’s follow-up ‘It’s Goodbye’ didn’t arrive until September of ’87 and went nowhere (well to #92). Despite being a better song than ‘Diamond,’ the single's popularity was hampered by a lack of promotion due to Hoddle’s transfer to the Monaco football club in Europe.

Thankfully, the two had their sporting careers to fall back on and today the song is considered one of the better entries in the British footballer song hall of fame.
