'Lifting Off' _DSC_3868_2_D

This is one of the close ups of the Pelicans that I was able to get at Lake Albert at the bottom end of the River Murray, in my home state of South Australia.

Due to 10 years of drought and gross over allocation from this magnificent river system, the lower lakes and The Coorong were really suffering. This area is so important ecologically, not just for the health of the river and every one who has come to rely on it, but also for all the other species of life that depend on it. Migratory birds in particular rely on this region and numbers in the last few years have dropped dramatically. There is a large pelican breeding colony on The Coorong (at Pelican Point) but because those waters had become so saline that brine shrimp weren't even surviving in the eastern end of it (it goes for over 90 kilometers), the pelicans were gathering at Lake Albert - as the lake had dropped a long way, it provided an ideal opportunity to reduce the introduced carp numbers. These pelicans were gathered where some of the licensed carp fishing boats come in. It was a photography paradise and this is my favourite shot from those that I got on the hour I spent there.
