Raku Yaki Tea Bowl (Explored)

I love Japanese green tea-- matcha. I do not know all the ins and outs of tea ceremony, but I know I appreciate the beautiful utensils and the peace of mind that the ceremony and a good bowl of matcha brings.

We have a very small collection of tea bowls at home, and this is my favorite. We picked it up during a weekend in Kyoto a few years back. It is in the raku yaki style, which dates back to the late 16th century. This type of pottery was established by the famous tea master Sen Rikū and Chōjirō, one of the clay tile makers who worked on Hideyoshi's palace in Kyoto called Jurakudai. The name "raku", which means "comfort", is derived from the name of this palace.
