Sometimes the best kept secrets are hiding right in your very own backyard!

After spending a successful rain free day at the water park in the Dells it was now time to search out my POD for the day. The country is a beautiful place, as long as you don't lose cell reception and get totally stranded in the wrong part of town. While driving Highway 23 out of Wisconsin Dells I decided to take a risk and take a turn down a road I'd never really paid attention to before, venturing further out of the Dells on winding roads with beautiful landscapes but no place to pull over! Finally I saw a great scene, so I pulled into a drive way of a house nearby and then pulled off the road. I had to be careful as with lot's of heavy rains the ground was very saturated and caused my feet to sink as I stepped out of my vechicle. Instead of shooting with the nifty fifty that has become my go to lens as of late, I opted for my 18mm 3.5 AI-S (landscapes are better wide most times anyway). No tripod in hand I used a steady hand and keen eyes to frame up the shot the way I wanted and clicked a few test photos. I found that it was too dark looking deeper into the woods so I had to boost my ISO to 800 to get a fast enough shutter speed, and then I started messing around with the aperture (something about full metal clicks makes it much more appealing). I tried 5.6/8/11 (if I had the tripod I could have steadied a lot more and done a true HDR) but I eventually kept the lens at f11 to grasp detail through the frame. The bugs were bad and I had to be careful of ticks, as being in the woods presents this sort of obstacle. I couldn't stand the constant nagging of blood suckers all around, and left quickly with a few images I knew I could work with (and no bug bites to boot!). This neat little area is located in Dellona,WI just outside of the Dells off Beaver Creek Road, maybe I'll venture back in the fall and winter to see what kind of colors show.
