Shawn
While walking North Street in Chicago on a warm March morning, I was keeping my eyes peeled for anyone who might be willing to partake in the (608)strangers project. While I was away from the (608) I still find the need to seek out people with interesting stories/faces to share with the world. The light was bright and rather harsh, but was a much welcome site after suffering through another winter that felt like an eternity. I stopped to let the sun shine on my face, and then I was stopped by a man who asked me if I could spare any change. I jumped at the opportunity and introduced myself as "Chris, a photographer of many strangers." The man looked puzzled, but put out his hand and shook mine and introduced himself as "Shawn, with a W." I explained the concept of snapping pictures of people I don't know and offered him the $1.00 in pocket as trade, while some may think it's not enough I knew that he was happy with whatever I could share.
Bright and direct, I struggled mightily in working a composition with Shawn but managed to get a simple head shot. When I asked him to tell me a little bit about himself, I found that Shawn was a lifetime resident of Chicago. "A painter of skies and the clouds abstract," he informed me. We didn't exchange much after that, leaving with a smile and another artist. The 100 strangers group is a talented pool of photographers, doing the same thing as I. Some control the light via flash or some go au natural, but it's the gathering of many a stranger in the pool that lets me know that I am not alone in this quest!
