Making the trek from Madison to Las Vegas is one heck of a haul, especially during the dog days of summer. As we drove for hours on end, the only photo ops I got to take advantage of were at the gas stations along the way. While filling up somewhere in between Nebraska and Wyoming, a Humvee pulled into the station; when the soldiers got out I figured it would be a good opportunity to get a stranger or two. The juxtaposition of human and vehicle drew me in, so as my siblings gathered snacks inside I made my move.
I approached with an open mind, and said hello; really a simple introduction (nothing to do with strangers at all). I then asked the soldier (as his comrade had gone inside for a break as well) "long drive today?" He smiled and expressed that it was in fact a day for long drives, I chuckled on the inside as I asked how many miles he had to go. "100 miles" and then I couldn't contain it, and I laughed out loud. I expressed that we were making the drive from Madison to Vegas, and he was in agreement that my drive was much worse then his. It was at this point I heard my sister yell at me "What are you doing weirdo!?" I turned around and exclaimed "talking to strangers, duh!"
At this point the other gentleman in camouflage came out clad, and I requested to snap a photo for my 608 strangers project. The agreed to my offer, and posed neatly at attention in front of the Humvee. I did explain they were allowed to relax a little bit, which drew a smile; and as I crouched on the hot pavement; I clicked a couple photos. One of the soldiers had been hiding his cigarette behind his back, and as that looked good I requested the other to do so as well. Clicking one more photo, and then I was summoned back to the car to start the next leg of my journey. I grabbed a business card quick out of my bag, and handed it to them so they could check out my work.
The journey West did provide me with all sorts of interesting faces, and I think that's why I enjoy the 100 strangers group. It's just full of interestingness* that you seldom see in daily life. So if you're up for a challenge, join the group and undertake the project (like I've said before) there is no timetable like a 365 (picture a day for a year) so why not join?
