Garden Route 087

The passage into the Knysna Lagoon from the Indian Ocean (on right). The first European ship to attempt to enter the Knysna Lagoon, the Emu in 1817, struck the rocks and had to be run aground to prevent her sinking. So many ships and fishing boats were lost trying to make the passage between the Indian Ocean and the Knysna Lagoon due to the unpredictable waves and winds, the narrowness of the channel and the rock outcroppings that it is considered one of the ten most dangerous passages on Earth. Legendary marine insurer Lloyd's of London refused to insure any ship attempting to enter the lagoon.
