South Africa--Johannesburg 013
Soweto Township in Johannesburg. Soweto was born when the authorities implemented the policy of apartheid to impose strict segregation. Black property owners were forced to give up their property and relocate under the Native Resettlement Act passed in 1954 to an area far removed from the White population. The government referred to this area as the South Western Townships, eventually shortened to Soweto.
At first appearance it would appear that Soweto is a holding area for the most impoverished, but Soweto is recovering. Despite the end of apartheid many people who could afford to live elsewhere choose to live in Soweto. Many residents are impoverished, but many middle and upper class people are moving to Soweto and building nice homes. Many Soweto residents consider it a badge of honor to live there.
