Rhinos

Simple tracing in ArtRage (iPad app) that I did today, using the app's digital pencil tool and a somewhat more precise physical stylus than what I had been using before.

 

Even with its obvious faults I'm pleased at how recognizable the rhinos are and how the composition and coloring seem to be okay. The photo that this is partly based on had obscure areas where I had to invent missing unfamiliar features, not all of them convincingly. It was surprising how important and critical details that I imagined were there turned out not to be when I looked closer. If you refresh your memory of rhinos by looking at a few photos of them you will see how unrealistic some of my simplifications here are, especially the uniform and markedly different shades of gray for them, which I chose to make it immediately clear there are two rhinos. As they browse together on a yellow savanah, the youngster is as close to its parent(?) as it can get and in the photo their very similar sunlit and shadowy grays blend them together.
