Shattered Dreams

On July 17, 2010, Pike County, Kentucky received a deluge of rain--according to some reports, 5 inches in less than 20 minutes and flood waters rose four feet in one hour's time. Houses were knocked off their foundations; trailers and vehicles swept away and twisted like pretzels, leaving the community reeling from the suddenness and extent of the disaster.
Ten days later on Wednesday, July 28, I joined a group from the company I work for to spend the day in Pike County helping with flood cleanup. We were assigned to work on gutting the interior of a house that had had several feet of water in the main floor rising to a height halfway up the windows. Sludge was still in the basement to be hauled out. This lone teddy bear caked with mud and resting forlornly behind the house gave silent testimony to the devastation and shattered dreams of many people.
