18th Weather Squadron Combat Weatherman

This Air Force Technical Sergeant (E-6) is a member of the 18th Weather Squadron. He wears a gray colored beret with flash and combat weather crest. This picture was taken in 2007 when the standard Air Force field uniform was still the woodland pattern camouflage Battle Dress Uniform (BDU). He wears a black colored undershirt. On his left chest he wears a basic level parachutist's badge (TOP) and senior level meteorologist badge (BOTTOM) above the U.S. Air Force branch tape. The 18th Weather Squadron unit patch is worn on the left pocket and the Air Combat Command patch is worn on the right pocket. Rank chevrons are worn on both sleeves. Since members of this squadron support Army units they are allowed to wear Army unit patches of the units they are currently assigned to support on the left sleeve. If they have previously been assigned to support an Army unit in combat they are authorized to wear a combat patch on the right sleeve. When photographed this Technical Sergeant was working with the Army's 82nd Airborne Division so he wears that unit's patch on the left. He wears the Army 4th Infantry Division patch on the right indicating he had formerly served in combat while serving with that unit. With the introducion of the Airman Battle Uniform the practice of wearing Air Force command and squadron patches and Army unit patches has changed.

The 18th Weather Squadron provides weather support to the Army's XVIII Airborne Corps, 18th Aviation Brigade, 82d Airborne Division, 82d Combat Aviation Brigade, and their units in garrison and in a tactical field environment. The squadron trains and maintains readiness to deploy worldwide to support aviation and ground combat operations. They manage four geographically separated subordinate units. The Commander, 18th Weather Squadron, as Staff Weather Officer to XVIII Airborne Corps, controls all meteorological and oceanographic assets of the Corps and subordinate units (during wartime). The 18th Weather Squadron commander also oversees support to the Military District of Washington, the US Army Transportation Center, US Army Armor School, and the US Army Aviation Center.
