paradigm shift

This project is called "The Sign Says."

The project was inspired by the movie the Beautiful Losers, which is about a group of artists who stay true to their art (i.e. they live without desire to achieve monetary or gallery success) and in the process they end up going from DIY subculture to mainstream commercial culture. They happened to make a lot of signs in this movie - and one of my students had said 'it would be interesting to make a series of signs.'

This thought combined with a brainstorm session the day prior about alternative places to exhibit our art - sparked the idea of creating an ART TRAIL on our school grounds. Part of this class we have spent considerable amounts of time roaming the trails on the 200 acres of our schools property... and the idea to help lead other people on the trails with the signs seemed like the perfect project. So I emailed the class and they were into it. And then began the "The Sign Says" ....

All signs are made from recycled materials that I have been collecting for the last three years. We have a giant storage container for the art department and it is filled with things and objects and books and wood and frames all that were on their way to the dump.... I opened the trailer to the kids and said - use whatever you want.

These are some of the works in progress!
