Point-of-care (POC) glucometers are the standard of care in bedside glucose management in most critical care units. Maintaining tight glycemic control (TGC) in critically ill patients is a big challenge. The challenge involves not just rapid turnaround time but also reliability of the methodology giving best accuracy. Tests are performed at bedside with results delivered in seconds. When test are completed the unit is returned to its cradle at the nurses station. There it makes the connection with a PC to automatically enter the results in the patients' electronic medical records. — at Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center.
