Surf’s Kingdom - #24 on explore
Ericeira, a coastline fishing village some 50km away from Lisbon, was last century best known as a traditional summer retreat for Portuguese families, but that changed considerably in the last 2 decades.
Ericeira is now considered the surfing capital of Europe, being the only European spot included in the World Surfing Reserves.
The 40 (!) beaches in the area that have excellent surfing conditions work as a magnet for surfers from all around the World.
Repeated World records for the highest wave surfed ever were achieved in a northwards Portuguese beach (Nazaré), which contributed to increase the awareness of the excellent conditions for surfing of this part of the western Portuguese coast.
