A Star Wars Scene
By now you are certainly wondering why on Earth did I choose this odd title to the image. Were some of the well known saga’s films shot here? No, but they could have been! The landscape is amazingly alien looking, with the barren ash covered land contrasting with the intense blue of the ocean. The silence and absence of visible life (no animals or plants, whatsoever) only add to the sensations felt by anyone looking at it from the cupola of the nearby Capelinhos lighthouse (which is precisely where this shot was taken - see my previous post on it: www.flickr.com/photos/142581467@N05/50468466492/in/datepo...).
This part of the Faial Island didn’t exist prior to 1957 and was created by the eruption of the Capelinhos volcano, that started in September 1957 and ceased its activity only 13 months later. The eruption started some 1200m from the coast and later moved closer, to just about 500m. An initial islet was created at sea by the eruption and it kept growing along that 13 months period, finally connecting to the Faial Island through an isthmus.
