A Little Piece Of Real Estate In Paradise - #9 on explore
The first word that comes to my mind each time I look at photos taken on Flores Island is “Atlantis”.
Quite right! The mythical island on Plato’s works, that supposedly got submerged in the Atlantic Ocean.
Flores Island is such a place. Its beauty surpasses any description or image I can provide you with. It seems impossible to exist and remain relatively unknown in a globalized world like ours.
This handheld shot was taken on the return path, from a small rocky beach that you see, distant in the image. A single, small house sits there, overlooking the sea. What a sight! But until your eyes get there, they will take you through an hidden track, where beauty will be all around you. Have a nice "journey"!
*****
Flores Island is the westernmost island of the Azores archipelago. It is, as well, its most beautiful one. With an area of 143 km2 and 4.000 inhabitants it has a verdant landscape of rolling hills, deep valleys, crater lakes bordered by hydrangeas, high peaks, magnificent waterfalls and monolithic sea cliffs.
Flores has been included on UNESCO’s list of World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Peace, rest and contact with nature are the keywords that better describe this magnificent island.
Here you can expect to live with the melodious sound of running water from crystal-clear streams, colourful hydrangeas winding over hills, petrified basalt, refreshing lakes, small white houses perched on green slopes. All these are defining features of Flores: a garden floating on the Atlantic Ocean!

My Azores album contains several photos taken on Flores Island (and some on the adjacent Corvo Island): www.flickr.com/photos/142581467@N05/albums/72157714758941848
