Houtong is at the sub-urban area of Taipei, could be reached with a 30min train ride from Taipei city. The small town was famous for produce coal mine, but now it is more for historical tourism and cats and kitties.
The pilgrimage route(参詣道) is the stair led to the Japanese temple(Shinto shrine), the temple was destroyed and left only the stair and the torii(鳥居, the wooden entrance gate), the temple left ruin was built during the Japanese occupancy 50 years+ ago, the stone stair is well built in the old style.
