On the Rebound (101/365)
Last year when my son and wife went to see the Big Apple Circus, I wasn't around; guess I was in Vancouver for a confrence; then I got an earful about how fun it was afterwards.
Hell yeah, I vowed to tag along this year.
So there we were today. Quite delightful, it was, hrmmmm.
Couple of things I found out today shooting these with my K20D and F 50/1,7.
(1) APS-C is nice because for a given aperture speed, you get 1.5x more reach than FF (provided your pixel density is the same––this does not apply when comparing my K20D to, say, a 25MP FF cam).
(2) Shake reduction wasn't such a big factor, contrary to what I thought, because in a situation like a circus, you're more worried about motion blur than camera shake blur; thus you try to shoot at faster speeds, by increasing ISO at the expense of image quality; thus, the better option may have been to go with my Canon 5D which has better high ISO capabilities (but without built-in image stabilization, important for me since I don't own any IS EF-mount lenses).
(3) AF is useless in this kind of low light, at least the K20D's AF was (I've heard Canon's isn't too good, either, not that I have an EF mount AF lens anyway). If I were going to manually focus, then I should've taken my Super-Tak 50/1,4; on the other hand, having the split prism focus screen was AWESOME; as good as the stock focus screen in the 5D is, there simply was no way I could've gotten a lot of shots in focus, especially with the decreased DoF coming from a larger sensor.
