Cones for Christmas
Today December starts with rain, and I dream back to all the nice and cold December days last year - with many birds to photograph in nice light in the low trees by the beach.
This young female great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) collected pine cones two days before Christmas Eve.
There were several of them for several months at that time last year, and I followed this one from she was younger with red on her head, into turning all black. This year I have only heard one great woodpecker there a couple of times.
Let's hope we'll get some nice December days this year as well!
