old church on the central Great Plains

The First Presbyterian Church in Coweta, Oklahoma was built in 1907, the same year Oklahoma became a state. The chandelier in the center of the main room was brought by boat down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and up the Arkansas River in the spring of 1907. The whole town turned out to meet the boat when it arrived at the Coweta landing.

The building functioned as a church for about 50 years, then was closed and abandoned for needed repairs. In 1972, it was renovated and designated the Mission Bell Museum, housing historic items and the 36 original church pews and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
