Series 1899 $1 "Black Eagle" Silver Certificate

This handsome large size (3.125 by 7.4218 inches / 7.938 by 18.851 cm) $1 Silver Certificate is commonly called the "Black Eagle." Large size Silver Certificates were printed from 1878 to 1923 in the United States as part of its circulation of paper currency. Silver Certificates were redeemable in the same face value of silver dollar coins. The large sized notes were replaced in 1928 by smaller sized currency (2.61 by 6.14 inches / 6.6 by 15.6 cm) still in use today. What appears to be red and blue random markings in the empty fields are actually color fibers embedded in the currency paper intended to make counterfeiting more difficult. The currency paper is not wood fibers and starch like typical paper but a very fine fabric made up of 75% cotton and 25% linen.
