DCU Shazam! - Issue #10
Freddie and I got no sleep that night. We spent the whole time talking quietly about what other superpowers I might have. Maybe I had laser vision? Or invisibility? Or maybe even Spidey-Sense?
We might’ve talked about a superhero name or a costume, but those seemed to have been already handed to us. Shazam, the Superhero! That had a nice ring to it, but I was careful not to say it again in case I transformed again. Before we knew it, we’d been talking all night and had to get ready for school. That might’ve been a mistake.
Yesterday had just been a bit of an introduction day for me. Today, I properly started my classes. Physics was my first class, and luckily I was with Freddie and Eugene for this. They were both in my year, as High School Freshmen, while Pedro and Mary were both Seniors and Darla was still in Middle School. At least that meant I had someone I knew.
Unfortunately, it didn’t keep me out of trouble, as I fell asleep at my desk in Physics and was sent straight to the Principal’s office by Professor Edgewise. Principal Peach let me off with just a warning but I could tell there was only going to be so many strikes with her, so I managed to keep my head off my desk for the rest of the day. Geometry, English, French and Music were all a breeze. I wasn’t necessarily paying attention, but the thought of me and Freddie going to test my powers after school kept me awake.
Where I really got to shine though was Phys. Ed. where we were playing Football. Needless to say, my team won. Coach even said I might make the team in a few years, the Fawcett City Tigers. Anyway, before I knew it, I was back on the bus home with my foster family. All in all, a pretty good day. Better than all of my other school introductions put together.
As soon as Freddie and I got home, we dumped our bags, then ran off out back, into the woods. When we were out of ear-shot of the house and anywhere else, I shouted ‘Shazam!’ at the top of my lungs, and I transformed again.
Freddie Freeman: “That is never going to get old! It’s so cool! Right so, how do you feel?”
Billy Batson: “I feel good, great even. I feel powerful!”
Freddie Freeman: “What sort of powerful? Like, that log over there, could you lift it?”
Billy Batson: “Well I won’t know if I don’t try!”
As I go to run over to the large log, all of a sudden there is lightning crackling all around me and I’m darting through the woods. Hyper-Speed?! It’s so hard to control and all of a sudden I’ve smashed through a tree, exploding it and falling to the floor.
Freddie Freeman: “Billy?!”
I hear Freddie from quite a distance away.
Billy Batson: “I HAVE HYPER SPEED!”
He can’t really hear me so I run back in a matter of seconds.
Freddie Freeman: “Wow! Hyper-Speed!?”
We giggle like the children that we are.
Billy Batson: “Hell yes I have Hyper-Speed!”
Freddie Freeman: “Okay okay, lift the log now! I bet you can!”
Without hesitation, I pick up the log and hold it above my head. It feels as light as a feather.
Then, an instinct tells me to kick myself off the ground, so I do… AND I FLOAT. Freddie almost has an asthma attack from how much he’s breathing.
We continue to test drive my powers until it gets dark. Sad to say that I don’t have Telepathy, or Frost-Breath, or even Spidey-Sense. But Flight, Hyper-Speed and Super Strength isn’t a bad power set for a scrawny foster kid like me.
