Look But Don't Touch

Passing through quaint small towns on California Highway 1 brought me memories of England’s Devon & Cornwall with beautiful gardens everywhere and wildflowers blooming by the cliff sides.

When you arrive here at Big Sur, CA after a long scenic drive, the first thing that crosses your mind at you is, “Wow! there is no one on such a lovely beach with its own cool personal shower. How can I get down there?”

Alas, you can’t.

The warning sign reads:

THERE IS NO BEACH OR OCEAN ACCESS IN THIS PARK Cliff areas beyond the fenced boundaries, including the BEACH, SADDLE ROCK and MCWAY FALLS area are completely off limits. Trespassing into these closed areas is a serious offense, resulting in a citation and arrest. The areas are extremely hazardous. Failure to respect the boundaries has resulted in complex rescue operations and tragic loss of lives. Please stay on the trail and out of these closed areas.

We arrived here chasing some good light and were not disappointed due to the fantastic light show that showcased the McWay Falls is one of the most scenic, most photographed views in Big Sur. The 80 ft waterfall from McWay Creek spills directly onto the beach. The color of the water can be surreal. The jagged rocks; the surging ocean; the coastal forest all converge and magic happens.

This is a such a most photographed scene, I was not too surprised when I came home and turned on the TV only to see the exact same scene taken by someone else on Chromecast screensaver.

My friend Arka Chatterjee who lives in Los Angeles drove about 5 hours to meet me which made my day and though we couldn’t shoot much that night, due to the thick cloud cover, we had some interesting conversations and photo geek talk. Arka’s charm rather than his attorney skills came in handy to wiggle out of a parking ticket that we were going to get when were parked in a day use picnic area to eat dinner. We promised the two very friendly cops that we will pay the parking fee and we did keep up our promise.
