DARDANELLES RANGE, CARSON ICEBERG WILDERNESS
PLEASE VIEW LARGE
Seen from a vista point at the end of the River Trail in Calaveras Big Trees State Park.
A 1.5 hour hike along the ledges winding through giant sequoias, tall pines, and cedars towering above a forest floor covered with dogwoods, California hazel nut, red buds, and an incredible collection of wild flowers brings one to an elevation rise of only about 350 ft (ending up at about 5000 ft), because of the numerous switchbacks along the trail. The vista point can also be reached by car, but that is not as much fun!
The Carson Iceberg wilderness and the Dardanelles range straddle the crest of the central Sierra Nevada mountains. The peaks range from 5000 to over 11000 ft. As seen in these photos, snow lasts through late spring and early summer months.
