The Pantone company originally produced colour charts for the cosmetics and fashion industries. Lawrence Herbert, who had been an employee of the company since 1956, bought the company in 1962 and began developing his own colour selection system, which he launched in 1963 as the Pantone Matching System. Thanks to several colour manufacturers offering the colour shades and renowned software companies (Adobe Inc., Corel Corporation and others) integrating the system into their products, the small family business developed into a global player in the colour industry over the following decades. In 2007, Pantone was acquired for 180 million US dollars by X-Rite, a manufacturer of colour measurement technology.
