“Mutton” Light Diesel Recovery Vehicle Mk.XLII
The Mutton was the longest-serving vehicle of the RAM program, with postwar surplus quickly snatched up by civilian railway companies. Despite the vulnerability alluded to in its name, it was beloved by both army and railway branches of the military and was a common sight at the tail of combat trains desiring rapid track repairs during advances or wrecking activities during retreats. With the ability to lift a Lamb tank when balanced by added counterweights, the Mutton also facilitated recovery and general material handling operations.
