Band Sewn On

I pieced the band from other linen scraps. The only place I diverged significantly from the original construction method was here, and I blame the brain weasels. The inside of the band of the original was sewn with running stitch at least 5mm away from the seam that whipstitched the outside of the band, and that would have made me unhappy to look at, so I decided to whipstitch the outer part first, then "stitch in the ditch" to catch the underlayer of the band.

I arrived at the band measurement after I'd sewn around the cap by tucking the two pleated ends one under the other, bringing the band up to cross over the front of my head, then measuring back down to between the bump at the back of my head and where my bun sits. That was half the length I needed, according to contemporary illustrations.
