This is a bottle of John Thompson's Stout For Invalids. This bottle dates back to the 1880's - 1890's. While stout style beers are still made, they aren't being marketed as a health food or an elixir for hospital patients
Stouts used to be given to patients in hospitals, sanitariums and asylums. Stouts using oats as one of the primary ingredients were given to these patients due the lower alcohol contents and the belief that they were beneficial to the health of the patient. Many times they were handed out in the asylums just to help "Calm Down" problem patients.
I bought this bottle over 10 years ago. The only question I have ever had on the bottle is the meaning of "It'll send for the minister" I hope the beer wasn't so bad it would kill you.
