Beyond the Pale
In many Native American cultures an albino deer is believed to be a spirit that has transformed into an animal after its life as a human. A piebald deer however, is considered to be a spirit that is in transition between our world and the next, either coming or going. In this state it's most vulnerable, and as such the killing of either an albino or piebald deer is forbidden in many cultures, or the guilty party's life will soon be forfeit and, as legend has it, their soul taken by the deer.

This Buck is one of my very best deer buddies. I have been taking pictures of him since he was very little. He is a big six pointer now, his rack is stately with long tines www.flickr.com/photos/rabbit-rabbit/51694950470/in/dateta... . I haven't seen him now in almost three months. I asked at the park if they knew if something had happened to him, and the person I spoke with said, "No someone saw him just last week, he's just fine." I was relieved. But, now it's about ten days later. I think they might have been told wrong. I have covered all of the stands there and their prominent social areas repeatedly. I have seen all my other buddies, Scaredy Cat, Crybaby, Spaceman, Of Sevens and Eights, Azazel, ... but I have not seen Pie. I know that some years ago He had something on his abdomen, and if you look close now it looks like there is a wound there that has healed. I read that Piebalds often have organ abnormalities. I hope that he is okay, and maybe has just moved on down the river to greener pastures ... But, I hate to say, I think that is wishful thinking. I can't see him, or any of the others, leaving Bdote. I hope I'm wrong.
