Debbagh
The ancient leather tanneries of Fés. The process, involving copioius amounts of urine and pigeon dung along with natural dyes of all sorts, has remained essentially unchanged for over a thousand years.
This view is from the roof of one of the many associated leather shops surrounding the tanning and dyeing pits. The smell is rather remarkable, though neither of us needed the proffered ameliorating mint in order to withstand it.
