Scott #2975
Civil War
The Civil War sheet of 20 stamps features historic figures and battles of the greatest war fought on American soil. The Civil War has many stories of personal valour and enormous casualties. Union Forces sustained more than 275,000 wounded and more than 359,500 dead, while the Confederacy had 225,000 wounded and 258,000 dead. Battlefield adversaries Generals Robert E. Lee and William T. Sherman dad agree on the nature of war: "It is well that war is so terrible, or we should grow fond of it" (Lee); "There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is hell." (Sherman).
