Excursion In the Barranco de Tirajana

The Barranco de Tirajana, located in the southeast of Gran Canaria, runs from the highest part of the municipality, the Caldera de Tirajana with its steep walls, to the plains of Juan Grande on the coast. The Barranco de Tirajana can be explored by car or bicycle going up its eastern slope. The suggested route starts from Vecindario, a commercial city in the southeast of Gran Canaria.

 

Following the signs to Santa Lucia de Tirajana along the GC-500 regional road, once you have crossed the town called Sardina del Sur, you will begin to climb the ravine until you reach the Los Cuchillos road, a winding route but with views of great beauty. Halfway there is the Mirador de Guriete, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the deep ravine. On your right, Ansite Fortress; archaeological site and home of the last Canarian aborigines until their conquest in 1483.

 

Following the road in the direction of Santa Lucia de Tirajana, those who wish to get to know this site up close can take the turnoff to the left that leads to La Sorrueda. It is recommended to stop at the viewpoint of the Sorrueda dam, where you can enjoy beautiful views of palm groves between stone houses.

 

Returning to the main road towards Santa Lucia de Tirajana, one kilometer before reaching the town, it is recommended to visit El Ingenio de Santa Lucia, where you can stop at the Ingenio viewpoint and enjoy an unusual view, an oasis of palm trees. and olive trees. In El Ingenio de Santa Lucia, you will have the opportunity to walk its cobbled street and see its centenary Canarian houses on both sides, where every corner could be a source of inspiration for a painter. The more adventurous, if you pay attention to the bottom of the cobbled street, you will hear the sound of water flowing through the ravine. From here, there is a path that goes down to the bottom, you can even enjoy a bath in the existing natural pools.

 

Returning to the main road towards Santa Lucia de Tirajana, you will arrive in this town in a few minutes. Gastronomy lovers will find the ideal place to have lunch tasting stewed goat meat and veal with potatoes, without forgetting to take a walk through the old town and visit the Church of Santa Lucia and the adjoining gardens. The church was built in 1905 and its shape can be seen from almost anywhere in the Caldera de Tirajana.
