Econolite Short-Groove
by A.J.____
Econolite started in 1933 as an installation contractor for General Electric's signals. In 1956, Econolite created their own lights which were modelled after GE's design. By 1957, Econolite bought out GE's signal line, discontinued the 4-way signals, and focused on making single-faced signals and controllers. This 8" signal is known as an Econolite Short-Groove, named after the grooves on the back of the signal that stop before reaching the housing ends. The Long-Groove was produced prior to this signal, but had some problems with moisture getting in from around the longer grooves. These signals shipped with custom lenses that have the Econolite logo on the fronts. I got this signal from an old friend who picked it up from a seller in the area. Each housing in this signal has it's own terminal block, making it easier to replace a damaged reflector on the field. This light was painted Rustoleum Dark Gray before the arrow sections were acquired from a forum member in California. The arrow section wields full circle visors as opposed to the open-bottomed tunnel visors more commonly seen. The full circle visors are popular in California and some neighboring states. The bracket is made by Marbelite.
