An intoxicated illusion
This is a submission for this week's photo assignment themed: Illusion.
Initially I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do for this week's photo assignment but after some thought it suddenly came to me. This is a technique I have seen before and is something I have wanted to attempt for myself.
I think that the light trails give the illusion of intoxication. It provides a visual representation of the associated spinning, dizzy feeling. I think that this meets the assignment criteria but I don't know what others will think. :)
WIT: This shot was taken on my dark wood dining table and consists of a cocktail glass filled with water with a cardboard box and a plain black t-shirt set behind it. I set my camera lens to an aperture of 22 and after some trial and error settled on a shutter speed of 8 seconds. I then used a powerful mini LED torch to first paint some light over the glass and then draw some light trails. I had to experiment with it a few times to get both the trails and a reflection that I was happy with.
For post production I took it into Photoshop and adjusted the exposure gamma a little bit to remove the slight traces of the black t-shirt that were visible and gave it a very slight blue tint as the trails were initially white. I finally decided to give it a square crop as the landscape shot felt a little off balance with quite a lot empty black space.
EDIT:
I was really pleased to find that this photo features in Explore for June 3rd, so thank you to everybody for your kind words and favourites. I appreciate all of the feedback! :)
