Historically they were supposed to lead an austere life, devoid of material belongings and desire therefore had to live on the alms provided by visitors to the temples. Nowadays it has become more of a means to make money if one does not really want to work for a living so it is difficult to distinguish the true Sadhu from the other. They apply vermilion and sacred ash on their forehead
