Incipient - Death Valley National Park, CA

These cool shapes slowly crystallize out of the salty silt, following alternating cycles of moisture and drying. The ground here was still wet, so I had to be careful not to step through a shape I would later be interested in shooting. These seemed like they were just in their beginning stages; maybe by now they're nice white salt polygons! The best salt polygons are not present all the time, much to my surprise given the number of pictures out there. If you're interested in finding some shapes worth shooting, be prepared to search long and hard. We had the best luck about 0.75 miles north of the Westside Road. Others seemed to find good shapes in Cottonball Basin during previous years. We heard that the area right around Badwater Basin proper was good for finding these things, but we were never able to!
