Yashica 24 TLR - Day 346 of Project 365

28/07/09

On the way back home I pass a couple of charity shops. I always like to have a quick look to see if they have anything interesting in. This Yashica camera was in the display case, when I inquired the bloke said "fiver mate" ($8) "don't work though its completely jammed... make a nice ornament"

Anyone who has watched my photostream will know that fiddling with faulty cameras is one of my addictions ;) ... so for the princely sum of £5 this came home with me ;)

The story could have ended here... but it didn't.... about 1 hour 30mins later "it's alive" Yay!

The problem was that the crank was very stiff or jammed with the back film cover closed. Open the back and the whole camera worked of a fashion, shut the cover anf the everything jammed! ... I spent quite some time pulling the front off assuming that is was a shutter problem. having finally got off the front and cleaned all lubed everything along the way, even with the whole shutter mechanism disconnected it was still jamming... f@&k !!

The only thing left to do was pull of one of the sides, which is a messy job and involves removing the leather effect cover (and probably ripping it in the process) I bit the bullet and started at the top corner where the damage would be least visible. As I was tugging I heard a clunk that sounded like the mechanism had reset... which was the crux of this problem... I managed to get a one of the cover’s retaining screws screw out and pry the side away slightly... and now the camera worked fine! In order to have a better look into the dark recesses of the camera I held it up to the light. As I did a small piece of clear plastic fell onto the floor. This little piece of plastic was the window for the shutter counter, and it had dropped inside and jammed up the whole camera!

And the moral of the story? The smallest details can be so important!

Don't let the shiny sparkly picture fool you this camera is still a bit scruffy!

Technical Jabble:

The Yashica 24 is one of a number of Yashica Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) cameras. This particular model was made in Japan probably over 30 years ago. There were a number of versions over the years and ,this the "24", was designed to take 220 size medium format film . It also produces the same size square 6X6 negative as my Kiev 88 camera.

Lightroom: auto levels, crop, vignette, tweak brightness contrast saturation and curves to add a bit more contrast . sharpen, save to JPG
