Mwendawima Nursery School

Mwendawima, Jambiani, Zanzibar, October 2021

Our first stop during our walking tour through Mwendawima, a fishing village on the southeast coast of Unguja (Zanzibar’s main island) in Jambiani township with Ameir of Wanawakewetu Tours, took us to its Pre-K/K school, Mwendawima Nursery School. The introduction to village life that ensued was a lovely, informative introduction to how the vast number of people live on the island.

.

Mwendawima Nursery School, a World Home for Youth (WHY Onlus) project, opened in January 2008. Funded and supported through a partnership between Milan’s Help the Children Foundation, the Caffi Prandelli family in memory of Manuela Caffi Prandelli, the Jambiani Kikadini committee for education and development, and private donors, the school serves approximately 90 children between the ages of 4 and 7, four teachers, and a cook. We were highly impressed to hear these youngsters counting to ten and reciting the alphabet in both Swahili and English! And despite the scarcity of equipment (desks, chairs, books) the teachers and staff deserve a great deal of credit for their hard work and commitment.

.

One of 12 secondary villages in Jambiani, Mwendawima’s economy is closely linked to the surrounding environment: most men fish for a living while women labor in the seaweed market, harvesting it for perfumes and lotions. The town has developed a modest tourist trade (primarily beach vacationers) but it typically doesn’t involve, or benefit, local residents. Cultural/heritage tourism is one way to address that need. Wanawakewetu tours wants to see that happen.
