Media Release: Going for Gold
This year’s Water Efficient Building Certification sees six receive gold for their exemplary performance in water efficiency
PUB, the national water agency, recognised 16 recipients as models in water efficiency at the Water Efficient Building (WEB) Certification ceremony today. Six obtained Gold while another 10 were awarded Silver. They received certificates from Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources on 2 October 2015.
Obtaining the Gold Certification are Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 3, Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 1 & 2, Ocean Financial Centre, Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay, One Raffles Link and the Tanah Merah Prison and Changi Women’s Prison. Recipients under the Silver Category also showed much dedication in putting in place monitoring systems to better track their water usage and minimise water wastage. (For details, refer to Annex 1)
This year’s recipients span the various sectors including office buildings/mixed developments, hotels, schools and the public sector.
“By 2060, water usage by the non-domestic sector is expected to grow from the current 55% to about 70%. As water remains an existential challenge for Singapore, PUB has put in place various strategies to manage water demand,” said Mr Michael Toh, Director of Water Supply (Network) Department, PUB.
“One such PUB programme, which we introduced last year, requires large water users to submit their Water Efficiency Management Plans to PUB on an annual basis. We are encouraged that leading organisations in the non-domestic sector have responded positively to our call to build in water conservation practices into their management and business processes. We hope that their stories and successes will inspire and encourage more from the non-domestic sector to do their part and marry water efficiency with their business practices”, he added.
Gold recipient, Keppel REIT’s Ocean Financial Centre, is a showcase of innovative eco-breakthroughs. It features a myriad of sustainable features such as the harvesting of rainwater for irrigation of rooftop gardens, recycling of condensate water for the cooling tower and the use of water-efficient tap fittings. These efforts contribute towards savings of 42,000m³ of water annually. In addition, water meters at key common areas and a fault reporting system help ensure minimal water wastage. Tenants are also encouraged to play their part in reducing their water consumption through a green guide that is produced and distributed to all tenants.
“At Keppel REIT, we recognise that sustainability makes good business sense. In keeping with our proactive approach towards environmental management and protection, we spare no efforts in incorporating sustainable initiatives in our properties, where feasible. The certifications from PUB are testament to our efforts and will further spur us in our sustainability journey,” said Mr Toh Wah San, Executive Vice President, Asset Management, Keppel REIT Management Limited.
Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay, another Gold certification recipient, takes on a systematic approach to achieve continual improvement in water efficiency through the development and implementation of water saving measures. The hotel uses water efficient fittings. They also encourage their guests to participate in water conservation through reuse of towels and bed linens. With these efforts, the hotel is able to save 5,200 m³ water per year.
“Novotel is proud to be the recipient for the PUB Water Efficient Building (Gold) certification. This is made possible through the efforts of the Novotel team, especially from engineering who have taken a systematic approach to achieve continual improvement of water efficiency and established a fault reporting system to report possible leaks to prevent water wastage,”said Mr Kevin Bossino, Vice President of Operations.
Introduced in 2004, the WEB Certification now has three categories: Basic, Silver and Gold. The Silver and Gold certifications, which started in 2013, are valid for a period of 3 years. Refer to Annex 2 for details on the certification.
