African Giant Kingfisher
A Male African Giant Kingfisher (Megaceryle Maxima). As large as a crow, this species is by some measures the largest Kingfisher in the world (the other contender for the title is Australia's Laughing Kookaburra, Dacelo novaeguineae). This picture was taken at Sunset Dam, Lower Sabie in the Kruger National Park (South Africa).
Over 10% of the world's kingfisher species may be found in Kruger, and indeed South Africa is home to roughly 10% of all life on earth. South Africa is the third most bio-diverse country in the world after Brazil (7 times South Africa's size) and Indonesia (1.6 times South Africa's size), and has greater bio diversity than any country of similar size. South Africa has almost as many species of life as the whole of North America.
